The fourth precept/commandment of the Church is “To observe the prescribed days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church.”
In a nutshell, here is the current law of the Church. For all who are 18 years to 59, during Lent they must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday each year. For all over the age of 14, they must abstain from eating meat on Fridays during the Lenten season. For those over the age of 59 who are able would benefit spiritually from continuing the Lenten fast in union with the Latin Church. For those who are able, the Church encourages but does not require that the Good Friday fast also extend through the Easter Vigil on Saturday. Those laws are quite simple. There is no reason that the faithful can’t live these laws.
The reason I say that these laws are simple is because the Church has continued over the centuries to become more and more lax in her obligations. Only a handful of decades ago, fasting was required on Wednesdays and Fridays during Lent, as well as during Ember Days three other times through the rest of the year. In our present day, we are only required to fast on two days each year. Also, in our modern world, it is no huge penance to eat meatless on Fridays during Lent.
The importance of fasting and abstinence deals with the interplay between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. By ritual and communal activity in the Church, we recognize that our bodies and our spirits are “all-in.” We literally have skin in the game. By our sacrifice, we encounter a longing for a time in which all of our heart’s desires will be satisfied, which will be in the heavenly kingdom. It also allows us to become more intentional about how we live our lives in a world that preaches that anything we want we should have. Fasting and abstinence is a simple way to enter into penance together as the body of Christ, preparing our hearts and minds to celebrate the penitential sacrifice in the Sacred Triduum that offers to us the forgiveness of sins and the way to eternal life.
