The fifth and last precept of the Church is “To provide for the needs of the Church, each according to his own ability.” This precept refers to three aspects of the Church’s life. First of all, it applies to the local Church, insofar as the faithful are obliged to monetarily support their parish and diocese. While the Church is a kingdom not of this world, its temporal activities require earthly resources in order to carry out her mission. Secondly, it applies to the missionary activity of the Church. The Church also needs temporal resources in order to carry out her missions in areas of the world where she is bringing the life and teaching of the Gospel to peoples who have not yet embraced Christ. Thirdly, as the Church says “each according to his own ability,” she recognizes that some do not have the same resources to offer in these two areas. A number of the faithful have no ability to tithe, but they give of their talents and gifts through volunteering for ministries and apostolates that bring the principles of the Gospel into concrete action.
To be clear, a Catholic who can support in some way the needs of the Church and fails to do so sins mortally. “Not all who say to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom.” And, “You are my friends if you do what I command you.” Our Lord has given us the example of selfless sacrifice for the needs of his flock. By the support of the needs of the Church, she can be a leaven in society by providing the resources to build up the kingdom of God in the world.
Most relevantly, let us look at the parish level. The parish currently has 14 full- and part-time staff to assist the clergy in carrying out the mandates of the Gospel in terms of the sacramental and pastoral life of the Church. They are professionals who use their skillsets to carry out the mission of the parish. On top of that, we have costs to maintain our facilities and stock our necessities (bathroom products, cleaning, electricity, candles, bread, wine, etc.). We also use a small portion of our revenue to support other agencies in the community who assist the marginalized, poor, and needy (Shepherd Center, Next Step Ministries, CareNet Counseling, Crisis Control, Room at the Inn, etc.). For those interested, financial reports can be requested from the main office. In any case, a great part of what a parish does is based on the regular support of the faithful. Without temporal resources, the parish would be crippled in living out her mission to be the body of Christ incarnate in Kernersville.
