The month of August in the Catholic Church is traditionally devoted to the Most Blessed Sacrament. At our parish, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place each Friday beginning after the 9am Mass. On Friday evenings, Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament takes place at 6:45pm. For over twenty years, Holy Cross has maintained this practice of Friday adoration. I highly encourage you to add time with the Blessed Sacrament to your routine.
St. Jean Marie Vianney, the holy pastor of Ars, France, saw this man in the town go into the church at least once a day for a short period of time. After a while of this, he investigated what the man was doing. The man was coming in and sitting down in a pew and just looking at the sanctuary. He asked the man one day, “Sir, you come in each day for a short period and just sit here. What are you doing?” The man replied, “I am praying before Our Lord.” The saint inquired further, “What do you say to Him?” Astonished, the man exclaimed, “Say!? I don’t say anything. I look at Him, and He looks at me.”
Prayer does not have to be complicated, flowery, and verbose. Especially before the Blessed Sacrament, we can just be still and know that the world outside can’t touch us before his Eucharistic throne. Frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament have a wonderful spiritual effect. They help us avoid sin, help us learn the art of prayer, help us receive Holy Communion in a more devout manner, help us avoid mediocrity, set our heart on fire, help us to overcome sinful habits, win blessings for our families, give interior peace in our soul, help us toward the salvation of our brothers and sisters, and bring rejoicing to Mary and Jesus.
Devotion to the Most Blessed Sacrament is devotion to the Body of Our Lord which was bruised, scourged, and crucified so that we may have the forgiveness of sins. It is equally devotion to the Blood of Our Lord (the monthly devotion last month) which was shed so that we may be washed clean. Eucharistic devotion unites us with the Soul of Christ, which sanctifies us at every moment. It is also devotion to the Divinity of Our Lord, to which Christ unites to himself our humanity so that we might have access to God’s Divine Life.
The Blessed Sacrament is the source and summit of the entire Church’s life and activities. May the Heart of Jesus, in the Most Blessed Sacrament, be praised, adored, and loved with grateful affection in all the tabernacles of the world even unto the end of time.
