The month of July has traditionally been devoted to the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord. Prior to the liturgical reforms of the 1960’s, the first Sunday of July was the Solemnity of the Most Precious Blood. When the Church released its updated “General Calendar” in 1969, she removed this special feast day and combined it with Corpus Christi, which is now the Solemnity of the Holy Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. The reasoning was that the Precious Blood was already rightly venerated during Holy Week and the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. In the current Roman Missal, the Mass of the Precious Blood is numbered among the votive Masses that can be celebrated at the celebrant’s discretion.
We should frequently call upon the Blood of Christ which he shed for our salvation. I heartily recommend that during this month you pray the Litany of the Most Precious Blood. May the Blood of Christ anoint us, wash us clean, and protect us from the wiles of our spiritual enemies. “Almighty and eternal God, you have appointed your only-begotten Son the Redeemer of the world, and willed to be appeased by his Blood. Grant we beg of you, that we may worthily adore this price of our salvation, and through its power be safeguarded from the evils of the present life, so that we may rejoice in its fruits forever in heaven.”
I am delighted to announce that Bishop Jugis has appointed another deacon to serve our parish. Effective August 1, Deacon Mark Mejias will be joining our parish family. Deacon Mark and his wife Yvonne live in Clemmons. Up to now, Deacon Mark has been assigned to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Greensboro, NC, and he has worked at the parish school as the Business Manager. He recently made the decision to retire from the school and desired to dedicate his ministry at a church closer to his home. Deacon Mark is fluent in English and Spanish, so he is a great fit for our diverse community. I am very happy to welcome him to the parish and certain that you all will welcome him with the same Christian charity that you welcomed me three years ago.
I also want to say, “Thank you.” On June 28, I celebrated my 8th anniversary as a priest. I was touched and moved by the gracious words, calls, cards, and wishes from so many of you. I appreciate your kindness and generosity. And I am grateful for your daily prayers for me! Know that each day you are remembered in mine. A parishioner remarked recently, “Father, I don’t know how you do this every day.” My response was simple: “The prayers of the people of God.” Together, let us continue our journey to heaven and pray for each other along the way.
