Happy Solemnity of Corpus Christi! Each year, this special Solemnity allows us to celebrate the Eucharist in a special way, to worship and adore with grateful affection the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ present in the Sacred Host and Precious Chalice. Let us always cultivate a holy reverence and awe when we come into the presence of Christ’s Body and Blood, present in all the tabernacles of the world.
It has been nearly eight years since Holy Cross erected the cemetery and columbarium at the corner of Cherry Street and Southern Street. The capacity is 300 niches in the columbarium and 280 regular cemetery plots. Twenty smaller plots are reserved in the Holy Innocents section for infants and children who died before their birth. All in all, Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery is a place for mourners to gather, prayers to be recited for the faithful departed, and our faith in the final resurrection of our bodies to be inspired.
Looking to the future, it was always the parish’s plan to expand the cemetery to the southwest. That project would include demolishing the St. Jane House and leveling the landscape to add approximately 300 more plots, as well as completing the columbarium to add 300 more niches. While we are not ready to move on the Phase II expansion project, I have been looking into ways to make the cemetery more accessible and more beautiful. Working with multiple contractors, we will be leveling off the northeast edge of the cemetery and installing a retaining wall and stairs so that it is accessible from the parish office parking lot. A civil engineer will assist us in surveying and installing cemetery pins in order to more easily locate grave plots. A landscape architect will then be retained to ensure the health of the grass. We are also looking into the possibility of putting up a decorative cemetery fence and gates which will distinguish this sacred space as consecrated and hallowed ground.
Persons eligible to be interred at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery are members of our parish and their immediate family members, priests who have served at Holy Cross and their parents, and persons connected to Holy Cross (including former members) with the prior approval of the pastor. If you would like more information about purchasing a plot or niche, please contact Charles Longino in the parish office.
